Hey all, welcome to 7th grade math, aka Pre-Algebra! I’m excited to have you in class this year. 


Since this is your first year in my class, I hope to change your idea of what math class should look like. Together we’ll be learning new concepts, problem solving, playing games, exploring God’s wondrous creation through a mathematical lens, and having fun!

1) Paragraph #2 AND Paragraph 3a OR 3b (you only do one or the other for paragraph 3a/3b...most if not all will write paragraph 3b):

  • Paragraph #2: Comparison of experimental vs. Theoretical probability:
    • start by explaining both to demonstrate your understanding of the two.
    • Then discuss which is a better predictor of student success for your game?
    • Explain your reasoning.
  • Paragraph #3a: Describe the theoretical probability of winning your game as well as all potential outcomes using a tree diagram. Please include a printed copy of your diagrams and refer to them specifically in your write-up
  • OR
  • Paragraph #3b: Describe the experimental Probability of winning your game, referring to the data you collected. You should have played your game 25+ times and should be able to pull from that the probability of each outcome.

Probability Carnival Report: Completed drafts of Paragraphs 1 (Game Description) and 5 (Biblical/Faith connection).  Your paragraphs should be well written and concise.  Please use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. 
  1. Paragraph #1: Game Description: include design of game, rules, how to win, and describe how you created your game. Sell me on why I'd want to come play your game.

  2. Paragraph #5: Biblical/faith connection: explain how this project, your game, or your work with your partner connects to your faith, creation, mankind, etc.

How The Market Works Assignment #1

  1. Have a conversation with your mom and/or dad about their investments. Get answers to the following:
    1. Do you invest in the stock market? Why or why not?
    2. When did you first start investing? 
    3. What do you look for when investing in a company/stock/fund?
    4. If you had one piece of advice for me about investing, what would it be?
  2. Begin your stock market challenge. YOU MUST INVEST IN AT LEAST 2 STOCKS/MUTUAL FUNDS BY WEDNESDAY.  You can invest in more than 2 before Wednesday, but you must have a minimum of 2 investments. 
(optional) Complete your How the Market Works Homework assignment (you have until Monday to complete it and earn $250 towards your portfolio. After Monday, you will still be required to complete it but will not get paid for it)
 
Please note some of the following details of the competition: 
  • By next Friday (Nov 7), you must invest at least 80% (minimum of $20,000) of your portfolio in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.
  • You can invest a maximum of 25% of your funds in any one stock, bond, mutual fund, or cryptocurrency (max $6,250)
  • You can invest in an unlimited number of stocks, bonds, mutual funds...BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE IS A $10 TRANSACTION FEE FOR EACH PURCHASE OR SALE.
  • Each transaction (purchase or sale) MUST INCLUDE A NOTE WITH REASONING. I'd prefer that you include a link to an article showing the research you did, but the reasoning can also be that you spoke with you parents and they think Nike (for example) is a strong buy.
  • Leaderboards will be updated in class each week.
